fluid mornings

I have always been an enormous fan of exam week, whether it be my own high school days, college or now that I'm a teacher.  On a normal morning, you might find me fighting my iPhone alarm clock, extra squinty eyed and dragging myself to the bathroom to brush my teeth.  Once I realize (this happens 9 times out of 10) that I have, in fact, overslept again I fly in to overdrive throwing on whatever clothes I can find closest to me on my floor (oh to go back to the days when I cared what I looked like for my students...) slapping makeup mascara on my face, grabbing snacks, making coffee and rushing out the door - sometimes with breakfast, sometimes without.
EXAM WEEK, however, allows me the flexibility to take my time and make a deelish breakfast.  I've been on this smoothie quick of late, and even when I am rushing (see above) I try to give myself time to make one of these...despite sometimes sprinting  in to class as the first bell rings.  Thank goodness I never teach first period!  Anyway, long story short, this smoothie is fantastic, and even better than that it's super healthy too.  Adding spinach gives it a hearty kick, and I swear on my blankey that you will never taste it for even a second.  Sometimes I think protein powder can make a smoothie a little gloppy, but thinning it with water and making it frosty with ice are two great ways to add volume without any added calories (cha-ching!).  Seriously, this has become a staple in my food rotation; I'm a little bit appalled it's taken me this long to make the switch to adding spinach to my smoothies, but now that I have I'm never going back.  Oh, and if you don't own an immersion blender STOP READING THIS AND GO BUY ONE.  Right now.  They are life changing little things.  But, seriously.
 

What's that green stuff in front of my ingredients?  Why, that's Whole Foods' Green Lemonade - the (second) best way to start your day ;)
Spinach and Berry Banana Smoothie
ingredients
1 c. spinach
1/2 c. blueberries
3-5 large strawberries, cut in to cubes
1 medium banana - either fresh or frozen (freezing your almost down for the count bananas is a great way to use them later in smoothies :) )
1 c. almond milk
1 scoop Whey Protein Powder (I like 365 brand)
water / ice


 
In a large cup (or blender if you're not cool like me and don't have an immersion blender...yet) add spinach, banana, blueberries, protein powder, strawberries, and almond milk.  If it seems like there's not enough liquid add some water, or if you're having trouble blending (using a conventional blender, ugh) that would be a good reason to add water as well.  Once everything is blended together I like to add a little more water - more smoothie to drink! - and some ice to give it a frothier consistency, blend one more time and then shoot me an email to say thanks for teaching you how to make the best smoothie in the WORLD.  Yes, the world.  Enjoy!
